Craving a place in some shade? This screened-in porch provides plenty of opportunity to relax during the day with a comfy couch for lounging and enjoying a glass of wine. We love the mix of throw pillows in pink and blue spring patterns and fresh floral arrangements with lots of greenery, creating an idyllic outdoor space that truly celebrates the season’s beauty. Bonus tip: since outdoor spaces are prone to spilled drinks (and possibly kids running around in swimsuits), sofas and rugs in darker colors and sturdy fabrics help keep furniture in tip-top shape.

THAT ’70S LOOK
The backyard pool has a plethora of design opportunities that should not be ignored. Think: pool umbrellas, blankets, and throws in bright and colorful hues to inspire some fun in the sun. When designing the lounging area by the pool, we’re into the funky patterns and bright orange and blue ’70s aesthetic that create the Palm Springs desert feel—crisp, cool and über mid-century modern.

MIX AND MATCH
The effortless mix-and-match approach is perfect for making smaller outdoor spaces feel cozy. By layering and focusing on mixing textures, this space has that lived-in yet polished look that creates seriously relaxing vibes. We love the look (and feel) of a woven rug, knit blankets, and floor pillows in bold colors or patterns, which automatically brightens a space by adding visual interest.

NATURAL AND ORGANIC
Talk about envy-inducing. Actor Hank Azaria’s Bel Air poolside loggia has us swooning after its warmly-toned wood furnishings and natural, upscale aesthetic. The actor’s open lounging area utilizes its open spaces by showcasing his backyard greenery. We can only imagine setting foot on the cool clay tiles after a dip in the pool and lounging on the that big, cushiony sofa with California’s natural beauty surrounding us.

THE LIVING WALL
Designer Mark D. Sikes’s Los Angeles bungalow features a beautiful courtyard that oozes with spring feels. Antique accents, metal chairs and weathered stone floors are juxtaposed with bright upholstery and chinoiserie ceramics. And while a full wall of greenery may not be an option for many, a smaller-scale vertical garden or wall-mounted plants can undoubtedly liven and freshen your outdoor space. Make use of your green thumb and comprise your own garden backdrop!
